Chrome VI-free surfaces
Clean and tidy

Since 2003 (The EU End-of-Life Vehicles Directive 2000/53/EC) the automotive industry has been banned from using surfaces treated with chromium VI. ARNOLD confronted this legislation at a very early stage, and developed corrosion protection coatings that are technologically equivalent to Chromium VI coatings.

ARNOLD supplies the following Chromium VI-free surfaces When making a selection it is necessary to take
account of the alternatives involved:

Thick layer passivating
Thick layer passivations have layer thicknesses of 0.3 - 0.5 mμ, comparable with the previous yellow chromating technique. The thick-layer passivation is applied at a process temperature of approximately 70°C, which means that the coating time is fairly long. The process management is subject to extremely high requirements.
The corrosion protection values are comparable with the former yellow chromating technique. The colour is transparent, and slightly iridescent. Because of the lengthy coating process, the surface cannot be supplied at a neutral cost.

Blue passivating with seals
The seals are made on a wax or silicate base. They can be applied over blue or transparent passivated zinc surfaces using the immersion and drying procedure.

Zinc lamella systems
These are combined organic/anorganic coatings, applied from zinc and aluminium labella consisting of single or multiple coating processes. A multi-layer organic top coat is generally applied on top to act as seal. All the layers are annealed at approximately 180° - 220°C. With zinc lamella coating, no hydrogen induced brittle fracturing occurs. Can be applied only to M6 threads upwards.

Top Coats
Top Coats are applied as thick, multi-layer coating systems (=> 5mμ) in a supplementary work process.
